Policosanol is comprised of a mixture of several long chain fatty-alcohols including octacosanol, triacontanol and hexacosanol. Studied for the important roles it plays in cardiovascular health, policosanol is increasingly becoming recognized for its use in supporting healthy cholesterol levels already in the normal range. In humans, randomized double-blind, placebo controlled clinical studies indicated that 5-20 mg of policosanol may provide beneficial effects to serumlipids. While the exact mechanism is still unknown, it is thought to play important roles in the inhibition of cholesterol synthesis, as well as providing antioxidant protection. Policosanol has been tested in thousands of patients, with minimal adverse side effects reported.
Gugulipid: In a randomized, double-blind fashion Guggulipid decreased the total cholesterol level by 11.7%, the low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) by 12.5%, triglycerides by 12.0%, and the total cholesterol/high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio by 11.1% from the postdiet levels, whereas the levels were unchanged in the placebo group. The HDL cholesterol level showed no changes in the two groups. The lipid peroxides, indicating oxidative stress, declined 33.3% in the guggulipid group without any decrease in the placebo group. The compliance of patients was greater than 96%. The combined effect of diet and guggulipid at 36 weeks was as great as the reported lipid-lowering effect of modern drugs.
After a washout period of another 12 weeks, changes in blood lipoproteins were reversed in the guggulipid group without such changes in the placebo group. Side effects of guggulipid were headache, mild nausea, eructation, and hiccup in a few patients.
Plant Sterols: Phytosterols, which are structurally related to cholesterol, are found in all plant foods with highest concentration occurring in vegetable oils and nuts.Phytosterols are known to reduce serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level without changing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol or triglyceride levels.
Daily consumption of phytosterols-enriched foods is widely used as a therapeutic option to lower plasma cholesterol and atherosclerotic disease risk. The cholesterol-lowering action of phytosterols is thought to occur, at least in part, through competitive replacement of dietary and biliary cholesterol in mixed micelles, which undermines the absorption of cholesterol.
Cayenne: Originally from South America, the cayenne plant has spread across the globe both as a food and as a medicine. Cayenne is very closely related to bell peppers, jalapeños, paprika, and other similar peppers. Used in the traditional dishes of Thailand and South America, cayenne is a well-known plant that has been
used in herbal medicine for hundreds of years. Folk medicine used it for weak digestion and poor circulation, as well as an immune stimulant. The most important active ingredients in cayenne are components of a pungent oleoresin, most importantly, capsaicin, but also a number of other related compounds.
Cayenne is also rich in carotenoids (orange and red coloring compounds), which are receiving current interest for their strong anti-oxidant properties. Ginger(Zingiber offi cinale) is grown in India, China, Mexico, and several other countries. It has been used in both Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and was known for its benefi cial gastrointestinal effects.
Garlic: In one study, results showed that garlic signifi cantly reduced total cholesterol (TC), plasma triglyceride (TG), LDL-C, VLDL-C, liver triglyceride, plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and elevated plasma antioxidant ingarlic treated rats (groups II and III) compared to group IV (lipogenic diet group). Also, liver PAP activity was
decreased in group II than group I whereas, the decrease in its activity in groups III and IV was due to the accumulation of triglyceride in liver. Therefore, the results are clearly indicative of the benefi cial effects of garlic in reducing lateral side effects of hyperlipidemia.
